reinstalling the service pack?

Hello:
On either SQL 2000 or SQL 2005, do you have to reinstall a service pack
whenever you create a new database? Or, does the new database "contain" the
service pack already upon the database's creation?
Thanks!
childofthe1980sYou never need to reinstall.

instances only, not for databases.

Reinstalling MSDTC on Windows 2003

Hello,
Does anyone know how to reinstall MSDTC on Windows 2003?
I have a 2 node SQL 2000 cluster (active/passive) which is having problems
failing over to the other node. Failing over the MSDTC Group to the other
node causes MSDTC to fail with Application EVENT ID 4156 ("RPC raised an
exception with a return code RPC_S_INVALIDA_ARG"). The System Log generates
EVENT ID 1069 ("Cluster resource 'MSDTC Resource' in Resource Group 'MSDTC
Group' failed").
I've been able to find an article explaining how to reinstall MSDTC on
Windows 2000, but not on Windows 2003. Any assistance on this would be much
appreciated. Thanks
Hi
Searching Google for "RPC raised an exception with a return code
RPC_S_INVALIDA_ARG" turned up a few threads, of which this one may be of
interest http://tinyurl.com/cnoqm

DNS seems fine as i can connect to and from the server across the network.
No other errors are generated apart from the MSDTC and Cluster errors. SQL
fails over successful, just not the MSDTC group

There is a note on there at the bottom, which says if you're using Windows
2003 to refer to the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301600/. That
only goes through setting up MSDTC on 2003 initially.
I'm not sure if the method for rebuilding MSDTC in that article applies to
Windows 2003 due to the note at the bottom, referring us to KB301600.

ReInstalling Katmai.

I cannot reinstall Katmai.
Somehow, I created a situation where Management Studio could not connect to reporting services. Being unable to diagnose why, I decided to uninstall and reinstall. I had installed everything. After running about 10 uninstalls, I went to C:/Program Files/ and blasted the whole Microsoft SQL Server tree. I went to the registry and did the same thing in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Microsoft SQL Server.
I rebooted. The error message: An instance with the same name is already installed on this computer. I'm guessing the setup program detected MSSQLSERVER in some registry key, and not another instance, but if I knew which one, I wouldn't be posting to this forum.

It may be that Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services has an SQL Server(InstanceName) entry.

Reinstalling DB Server - Backup/Restore Help

Hi,
Seems my old thread doesnt have any response anymore.
reposting it again with only relavent info..
For some reasons I need to reinstall my Production SQL
Server 2000 Database Server from OS level and infact
recreating arrays etc.
My point of Intrest is How to plan the backup of databases
from existing server to restore them after reinstallation.
1. Can I just create the .BAK files of user/system
databases copy it to other server and restore it on
freshly installed server.
or
2. I detach the user/system databases.. copy the .mdf
& .ldf files to other server and restore it on freshly
installed server using attach db sp.
In both cases what is the difference and what are the
advantages and disadvantages? and which one is followed in
practice?
Also, the server on which I am going to backup database
has SP3a for SQL Server.
Do I first need to up to date the SP's(2,3a) for SQL
server on fresh Installation then restore the Databases or
Vice-versa? (keeping in mind I want to restore the
master, msdb backups). Also does restoring masterdb backup
on fresh Installation makes any sense?
Thanks In advance for all the patience and replies.

Hi

Try doing it from the commandline with the switch SKUUPGRADE=1. SQLDIR\setup SKUUPGRADE=1

Reinstallation problem of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition

I was forced to reinstall SQL Server due to a fault in the Full Text Engine.
I removed everything and got the message:
"A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already
installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template.ini and
set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component."
when it reached the last section, Workstation Components.
In the installation report below (reduced for lack of space) you can find
the line:

Reinstall SQL Sever 2000

Hi all,

I have a server that is missing some important files, and instead of doing process of elimination, I feel it is best just to reinstall 2000.

Now is there a way to reinstall 2000 and just getting the files that the server is missing?

Is there any guidelines or steps for reinstalling 2000 out there?

Thanking you in advance.

LystraDoes anyone have any answers?

Thanks

Lystra|||I have look everywhere in order to get detail for reinstalling 2000, and have come up with anything.

Will I need to uninstall SQL and then install it all over again to get the missing files?

Thanks

Lystra|||You can try to re-install the service pack. That will replace some files, but not necessarily all of them. And if you are missing enough files that SQL Server will not start up in the first place, you may end up having to just uninstall and re-install SQL Server, altogether.

And, of course, you may want to look into restricting the permissions so folks can not accidentally delete these files.|||Thanks for responding.

As for the data files once I uninstall will the files be remove?

Do I need to move the data files of the server??

Lystra|||I have not uninstalled SQL Server many times, so I do not know if the data files are left on the disk. It is best to save off backups of all of your databases (master and msdb included), before you start this sort of thing. Once you are certain you can get all of your data back from any mishap, then you can start trying to get SQL Server off the box.|||True, its always better to keep the upto date backup of the databases and store them in other location until the resinstallation process is completed.

There aren't any defined steps to reinstall just install the CD and continue as specified in the screen. Its better to do it from scracth by uninstalling current version , remot registery referenced keys, reboot the box and then reinstall SQL.|||Hi

I have found a MS Knowledge base article on How to manually remove SQL server 2000 Default, named, or virtual instance.

I help you with the reinstall process.

Thanks for all your help

Reinstall SQL Server 2005 Problem (cannot connect to <server>)

I had installed SQL Server 2005 for the first time in order to study for the SQL SERVER 2005 Implementation and Maintenance exam. Everything was going ok until I got to the section on Partitions. When I attempted to follow the lessons on partitions, I received an error indicating that the Enterprise Edition was needed for Partitions.

I uninstalled SQL Server and re-installed the Enterprise Edition (MSDN disk). When I re-installed, I was not promopted for a new/default instance name). The old instance that had used for the original installation is presented when I attempt to "Connect to Server." When I select that instance and click Connect, I receive the "Cannot connect to <server name>" error message.

How do I re-establish that instance name or create another default instance?

Regards - Tony

Would you check Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs? If there is still SQL Server 2005 entry, please choose it and click change, then click Report button to get all information about SQL Server 2005. The report will tell you which components of SQL Server 2005 are still existing on your machine.

Based on your description, maybe the previous SQL Server 2005 has not been uninstalled successfully.

If you do not mind, you can type in a new instance name to install another instance as multiple instacnes are supported provided that you have enough resourses such as free disk space.

Reinstall SQL Server 2005

Hi all,

I want to remove SQL Server 2005 sp2, so I need to reinstall SQL Server 2005. What steps I need to take before remove the SQL Server 2005. Because I don't want to loss any data on the Database Server, Analysis Servers, and Reporting Server.

Thanks,

Why do you want to uninstall SP2? It might be easier to solve the issue you are having with SP2 than completely reinstalling SQL Server 2005.

Hi WesleyB

My problem is the inscope funtion in Reporting Service, and it is the know issue in SP2. And I don't like there workaround solution, so I need to roll back to SP1.

Thanks,

You can uninstall service pack 2 after which you best install the previous fixes that were applied.

Take a backup of your databases before you try this however.

Reinstall SQL SERVER

Hi,
I have a server with SQL Server 2000, and the sql are with
problems. Everyday a lot of people work on a base of data
in SQL. Can I reinstall the SQL in a normal day with that
all people working without harming her work?
Cheers
JoaoWHat are your problems? Reinstalling is a bit extreme of
a solution.
Unless you were installing a new instance and not
overwriting the existing one, you would definitely affect
the availability of SQL Server, because you are
essentially uninstalling and reinstalling. You would need
to back up any databases first, uninstall, reinstall SQL,
then restore the DBs.
Sorry.

ReInstall Sql Server

I lost access to sql server, "sa" is "Denied" "builtin"
is "Denied" before I have a login for a standart user but
I can't use it I get connection fail all the time. I want
to reinstall Sql Server am i going to lose the databases?
Is there any hope for this situation?
Please Help!!!!!!!!!
ShalomHello,
it depends on your NT-Account. If you have still access to the
server console you can login, shutdown the sql-services and
copy the database files to a secure place.
You can than use the rebuildm.exe tool to create new system-db's.
Reattach the user-db's and all is fine.
That would be my suggestion...but maybe some have a better one.

But how you have lost the rights?

|||You have a couple of possible solutions.
1. Restore master from a backup
2. Rebuild master then re-attach the user databases.
3. Attempt a Windows NT Athenticated connection with the NT admin account

Reinstall SQL 2005 Management Studio

We are running SQL 2005 Standard Server. Apparently our server was slightly
"damaged" and SQL 2005 Management Studio is no longer installed.
How can I re-intall this? I have tried reloading SQL to no avail. I am not
seeing it as an option. I am selecting client tools during the installation.
SQL Server is running as Dynamics GP is functional.
I am wondering if it is installed and the shortcut is missing. Can anyone
tell me the executable program name and the location so I can check this.

Reinstall RS Client?

Hi,
I have purchased a new copy of SQL Server for running Reporting Service as
the Evaluation copy has expired.
I have installed Visual Studio with RS client on a workstation as I don't
want to install Report Designer on the Server.
I would like to know is it necessary for me to uninstall the Evaluation Copy
RS Client on my workstation before installing the new RS Client ?
Your advice is sought.I am pretty sure the evaluation expiration is only the server part of RS,
not the design tools. Are you getting a message saying that it has expired
when you try to design? You should still be able to design and preview. If
that is the case (I am trying to remember what I did but I don't think I did
anything with the client tools). Unless you have a problem my suggestion is
to leave the designer alone. After installing the new server you should
download SP2 and install that at both the server and the client.

Reinstall Reporting Services

Does anyone know of a way to completely reinstall reporting services?
I tried to do it through the SQL Server 2005 install and at somepoint
it told me the only way to modify/reinstall an existing installation
for this component was to do it through Control Panel > Add/Remove
Programs. I tried that, it ran through it's setup, but didn't really
reinstall anything or give me any installation config options. I've
messed up my reporting services pretty good and would like to
completely uninstall then reinstall if possible.
Thanks,
MattMark
Before uninstalling RS you should remove 2 RS components manually. Follow this
Launch Component Service MMC snap-in from Administrative Tools.
Navigate down to Components Services | Computers | <My Computer>| COM+
Applications, you fill find at least a pair of IIS application for RS &
Reports. You have to remove them, in order to do so you will ned to select
each applications properties dialog and Uncheck Diable deletion on the
Protection tab. This will delete them.
Thanks

Reinstall problem with Report Services

I have been playing with my Standard version of SQL Server with no problems. Now I wanted to start exploring Reporting Services, however whenever I tried to connect to the instance through the Management Studio, it would fail. I did notice that the folder in IIS was not present so I am thinking it was something I failed to do in the initial setup.

I have uninstalled everything, but when it gets to Reporting Services, I get an error message "The setup failed to read IISMiniMap table. Error Code -2147024893." I did a search on various newsgroups and forums and found a message about installing and running some Microsoft Cleanup utility. I did this, but I am still getting the error message and then the uninstall rolls everything back.

What do I need to do here, short of doing a total reformat of the harddrive and just reinstall everything?

Thanks for the information.

To add to this problem, I uninstalled all that I could with my original instance of SQL Server (minus Reporting Services). Now I have reinstalled a new instance that also created a new instance of Reporting Services. However when I go to IIS, it says that the Report Server is stopped and I cannot restart it. I get the error "The request is not supported".

What is up with this?

Reinstall operating system without loosing SQL data?

If I have SQL server installed on one partition(D:) and the OS installed on
another(C:), if I need to re-install the OS is it possible to re-install SQL
server without loosing my already created databases?
The drive with the OS got corrupted somehow over the weekend, but the SQL
server drive still seems to be working just fine.As long as the database data and log files are on a DIFFERENT physical
drive, you can re-install SQL Server, then use sp_attach_db to re-attach the
physical files to the new SQL Server..
Look for sp_attach_db in the SQL Books.

users through 'report' option and ) link existing logins
with database permissions. Now, the logins are maintained
in master and will be lost upon new installation or master
rebuild. You have to re-enter all login/password
information. Alternatively, you can keep list of passwords
with you through this script generator
select 'EXEC sp_addlogin '''+name+''', ', CONVERT(VARBINARY
(32), password), ', @.encryptopt = ''skip_encryption'''
from syslogins
where dbname='test' -- database name
and name <> 'sa' -- exclusion list
order by name
(replace TABS with space on the resulting script and
execute it to create logins)
