Relability? [part3, zombie, sorting(?)]

It seems that we are pushing IS to the limits :). And again - still SSIS engine version RTM, so my comment may have been addressed in SP1 or HF1. A package is executed by SQL Agent once every day. Once in a fortnight it stalls - goes to the zombie mode. The status of the package in the SQL Agent monitor is "Executing", while log file reports nothing.

Now, I believe it is caused by sorting component in the data flow task. I have three reasons for doing so: the log file shows that data sources were read; I think I have seen it once in MS Studio and finally - previous version of the package without sorting worked fine for several months.

In our case, we used sorting for merging datasets - we decided to use staging (temporary) tables and lookups to the same task. Going live today, so hopefully it will be a valid work around.

The NSort sort transform is far superior to the stock sort in performance, and in forgiveness when the stock sort would start spooling to disk in lower memory conditions. NSort is not free, and it works well.

Extrasort ( a third party sort transform) also works better than the stock sort with in terms of speed and low memory, but it doesn't work with 64 bit, so it may not be an option for your production environment.|||Try increasing the EngineThreads property of the data flow. There is a known bug that may cause pipeline with async components (like Sort) to deadlock if the number of threads is low.

Re-Installation of SQLExpress on XP SP2 Chinese Tra Version

When I installed SQL Express first time a few days ago, it work ok. But, after removing all sql server componets through 'control panel'->'add or remove programs,' something seems wrong in the registry because the re-installation of SQLExpress will never success with an error

I follow the instructions in help page and try to set the values "Last Counter" and "Last Help" in '[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib]' as same as the values "Counter" and "Help" in '[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib]'.........but the data type are dword and string resp. So, setup checker will think the values are different and no way to reinstall the SQLExpress.

Can anyone tell me how to fix it or just let me know SQLExpress not for Chinese XP SP2?

Hi Andrew,

I've looked over the instructions that you're reading and they are a bit difficult to follow, but they do work once you figure it out. The issue is that you need to find the maximum value for the Counter and Help keys, but because of the data type of the key, the maximum value is not necesarily the last one in the list because they are not sorted numerically. Try to follow the instructions again, but this time when you're looking up the values, be sure to examine all the numbers to get the highest one. Remember they are sorted as strings, so the value list may look like...

1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 2, 3, 4, 5

In this case the highest number if 14, which is in the middle of the list, not the 5 at the end. The first time I went though this myself I automactically picked the last number in the value list assuming it was numerically sorted; I was wrong. Hopefully this will solve the issue for you.

Reinstall problem with Report Services

I have been playing with my Standard version of SQL Server with no problems. Now I wanted to start exploring Reporting Services, however whenever I tried to connect to the instance through the Management Studio, it would fail. I did notice that the folder in IIS was not present so I am thinking it was something I failed to do in the initial setup.

I have uninstalled everything, but when it gets to Reporting Services, I get an error message "The setup failed to read IISMiniMap table. Error Code -2147024893." I did a search on various newsgroups and forums and found a message about installing and running some Microsoft Cleanup utility. I did this, but I am still getting the error message and then the uninstall rolls everything back.

What do I need to do here, short of doing a total reformat of the harddrive and just reinstall everything?

To add to this problem, I uninstalled all that I could with my original instance of SQL Server (minus Reporting Services). Now I have reinstalled a new instance that also created a new instance of Reporting Services. However when I go to IIS, it says that the Report Server is stopped and I cannot restart it. I get the error "The request is not supported".

What is up with this?

can use the RegEx libraries and then expose that CLR function to SQL Server
2005. In fact there is an example of this in the books online.

regular backups

Hi,
Is it possible to make regular back ups of a database in such fashion that
it is a bit like a version control system.. where you store differences
(incremental?) but in such way that backups are made daily or weekly and you
can decide to restore a backup from 20 days ago?
In other words, a 'history' of backups should be kept so I can go back 5
backup sessions ago and restore something that's 5 days old. If this is
possible, how can I pick the 'date' from which to backup from?

Lisa,
have a look at creating a maintenance plan. You can select to keep x backups
made at whatever frequency you require and it'll round-robin the files. The
backups have a filename indicating their backup time. SQL Server doesn't do
incremental backups (not even in SQL 2005 AFAIR), but does differential and
transaction log backups which are covered in books-on-line (BOL) and might
be what you require.

Registering/licensing DEMO SQLserver....

Hello,

I am new to SQLserver and have installed the DEMO version of SQLserver 2000 on my system. I got it up and running and verified that it was working properly.

I then purchased two CPU's of the standard edition for my system. The software has arrived, but all that arrived are the CD's. I see no key, nor do I see a way to provide a key even if I had one.

I do not know how to proceeed and need help to figure out how to obtain a key or how to enter it if I ever obtain one.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

JamesActually, your CD's are supposed to be accompanied by invoice where corresponding keys are clearly printed out. If this is not the case you fell victim to some SW scam.|||Ask the vendor for such keys, in general MS software CDs comes with CD key printed on the CD or a paper attached to the CD cover.|||No such keys on the CD or paper. i'm linguistically hogtied.|||I think it is I that is not making myself clear due to the fact that I really do not know. I have never done this before, and I am sure it is a very simple question.

We have ordered two CPU licenses for SQL Server and I have not seen anything that looks like a "key" that I would normally associate as a Microsoft license key. Hence, I think we need the paperwork that goes with the licenses from my vendor as the others have mentioned. I am awaiting that now (I hope).

I think the issues came when I asked how to register (license) the product once I get the license keys. I have found no way to actually put those ubiquitous Microsoft keys in (that I am not in possession of at this time) to any software.

To an old unix person it is a mystery.

-PatP|||Yup, that's what it sounds like...unless it's an eval, 90 or 120-day.|||I initially loaded the evaluation version that I downloaded off the web. I was calling this the DEMO version in earlier emails, sorry for that mixup.

I was also told that it was a full copy and all I needed to do was apply my licenses when they arrived. That is where the problem is, both not having the license keys, nor knowing how or being able to find out how to apply them when they do arrive.

I am handling getting the keys, but need to know how to apply them when they come.

-PatP|||If the CD does NOT have anything like "Evaluation...", then uninstall your eval AFTER BACKING UP MASTER, MSDB, and your own DATABASES (!!!), and proceed with normal installation from the CD. If you do run into "Enter Product Key..." situation, contact your SW vendor or whoever you purchased it from, else - keep going. Once installed, you'll need to restore your master (check Books Online) and msdb, along with your user database. Last, but not least - download and apply SP3.|||Heck, I'm paranoid. I remove the TCP/IP, install SQL 2000, install either sp2 or sp3a, then reboot. Once the box has gone down, then I plug the TCP/IP cable back into it.

1) These are licenses we pruchased from a vendor we deal with all the time. I actually got two sets of CD's instead of just one, I guess since I ordered two CPU's worth of licenses.

2) We do not have a site license, we are a small organization and this is the first time we are using SQLserver.

So, it looks like I will need to do the thing I didn't want to do which is de-install the evaluation copy and re-install the real one off CD. Of course I will not do this until I get what looks like Microsoft keys (or the like) in my hands.

Registering sqldmo.dll

Hi everybody,

I have a problem with registering sqldmo.dll (version 2000) on Win98 on client machine with no sql-server installed.
First I have run the sqlredis.exe and than I have copied all files described in sqlredis.txt into the windows system directory and than I run regsvr32 to register sqldmo.dll. On Win2000 seems to be all OK but on Win98 I got error 0x80040154: DllRegisterServer in sqldmo.dll failed.

Does anybody know what is the source of this problem?Well I have found It!

You have to register atl.dll (for Win9x it have to be ANSI version) before sqldmo.dll - such simply, but Microsoft doesn't mention this nowhere...

registering new sql server

I have SQL server developer version running on my local workstation.
I recently got a new Win 2003 Box.
Couple of things.
1) IT dept gave me 35 gigs are raid 5. Is this enough for a large DB?
It seems awfully small to me.
2) The SQL server is running all well. In my local Enterprise Manger.
I tried to register a sql server. But I can't get a connect() back.
What could be causing this? I can ping the SQL box because it's on the
same subnet.

Depends on what you consider a large db. We've got a sql database just over
1 million records spread across 100 tables with that many views and stored
procedures besides, and that's 2gb.

Only you can tell us how large your database is going to be. You need to
research your business requirements and determine size and growth from that.
There's no such thing as a "typical" size for a database.

Can you give some more detail. Do you get an error message? Can you verify
in Service Manager that the server is running? Did you supply a valid user
name and password?

Thanks. I looked at the old DB and realized that we only grew at a 3
meg per month rate. I guess the DB is good for awhile.

I didn't do anything. My IT guys set up the box. The error message I'm
getting is, WINBOX-SQL server does not exist or access denied.
I created a user as a DBO owner. I also tried with the SA login
credentials. I can remote desktop into the server and login to the SQL
server through Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer.
I have no idea what Client Network Utility is so I looked it up in Books
Online. I will give that a try.
BTW How do I find out if they installed the Developer version or the

Yes the service is started. I did created a user and also used the SA
password to login locally.

A link from the KB article David posted fixed the problem. Funny thing
is that the server is not on DHCP. It was when we first popped it in to
the rack but promptly changed it to a fixed IP address. Kinda funny.
