Reinstating Replication on a subscriber automatically

Hi all

I am setting up a system using SQL Server 2005 replicating to both SQL Express and MSDE clients. My question is this - if a client PC has been rebuilt - i.e. new hard disk etc, how can I automatically make that machine realise that it is already a subscriber of a SQL Server database and for it to automatically get a snapshot?

If the subscriber has the same name as the old one, the SQL Server version of the subscriber is the same as the old one, and the history or distribution retention period has not passed you merely need to restore the subscriber database and the distributor will backfill the missing commands.

If this is not the case you should try to do a no-sync and then a validation to determine what is missing, or how out of sync you are. At that point you might want to evaluate re-initializing.sql

i am using merge replication for data sync. in the client i have utility
written in vb that use
merge object. Clients get the dynamic snapshots. My question is:
when i run the job and create a new snapshot for a user,
how can i force the client to use this new sanpshot instead of getting
incremental changes?

|||If you are referring to an existing client, you would have to reinitialize
the subscription. However I don't see why you would want to do this. Please
can you provide a bit more background info.

|||for some clients , that do not synchronized for a long time, retention
period expired
therefore some data is lost. so i create a new snapshot with fresh data for
them and i want them to use this new snapshot.
as i said before , they are using a vb utility to synchronize (anonymous
pull subscription).
you know , this utility works like merge agent. i want to do something in
the publisher to make it get the new snapshot.
if the clients remove the utility which deletes the database and install
again , it is working fine. but i dont want them to do that.

Registering SQL Server...

Hi,
I am trying to connect remotely to a client's MSDE database with my SQL
Enterprise Manager so I can administer the database. I have established a
VPN to the client which I can ping and terminal serve into the server but I
cannot register the server with the SQL Enterprise Manager. I have even
tried turning off my Windows Firewall.
What connection property am I missing at either the client site or at my
office that is preventing me from connecting?

what kind of exception are you prompted with, at connection try?

|||Did you make a portscan to see wheter the SQLServer is reachable and
listening on that adress ?
Perhaps the ports are blocked by the VPN Gateway, ping could be reachable
beacuse ICMP is treated in antoher way than ports. Its a own protocol:

Try to use a portscanner.

which is a general error reported by the MDAC stack..

|||Chris, see an earlier post 'Getting to the bottom of ..." in the
subject. (just a few days ago).
If it's running on XP it's an XP login problem which can be cured on
the XP/Msde machine. There's a long explanation of how to cure this
(without re-installing).
It's not an MDAC problem. Come on MVP's you should know this stuff!
