reinstalling the service pack?

Hello:
On either SQL 2000 or SQL 2005, do you have to reinstall a service pack
whenever you create a new database? Or, does the new database "contain" the
service pack already upon the database's creation?
Thanks!
childofthe1980sYou never need to reinstall.

instances only, not for databases.

Reinstalling SQL Server on a Cluster

OK... Here's the deal. We had a 2 server cluster set up with SQL Server.
This consultant we were working with uninstalled the cluster and then
uninstalled SQL Server. Now we set the cluster back up, but we're having
trouble re-installing SQL Server. Can someone point me to directions on
re-installing SQL Server on a cluster?
Thanks

cluster, and then had to go into the Registry and remove the remnants of the
SQL Server installation (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSSQL and \Microsoft SQL
Server keys), then reinstall on the cluster. For some reason when I
uninstalled the first time, it kept a reference to the prior virtual SQL
Server installation, and wouldn't let me overwrite it.
Thanks for the help!

reinstalling SQL ODBC Drivers on Windows XP

Apparently one of my users lost their ODBC drivers for SQL Server.
When I try to run the program that uses those drivers obviously I get
all kind of errors.
I tried going into the ODBC administrator and when I try to edit or
delete the DSN I get a message about the drivers being missing and I
need to reinstall them.
I tried running MDAC 2.7 and everything ran, but I still get the error.
MDAC 2.8 will not run on that machine - it gives a message saying that
Windows XP already has all of the files associated with MDAC 2.8.
Any ideas on how to reinstall the drivers in a case like this?

Not really, but you can install the SQL Native Client, which contains a
brand-new, MDAC-independant ODBC driver for SQL Server.

Reinstalling sql 2005

please ... really need some guidance...
I have removed the old and reinstalled SQL server 2005 standard...
Getting the following message:
Your OS doesn't meet Service pack levels requirements
for this SQL server releaseSo I installed Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Getting the following message: This machine does not have a product that matches this installation package.

I have Windows XP Professional 2002 32-bit (Dell), Windows XP Service Pack 2, IIS, NET Framework 2.0., 13GB , processor intel 1,5 GHz, 256MB RAM

1. What is the SKU of SQL Server 2005 are you installing? On Windows XP SP2, SQL Server Enterprise edition cannot be installed.

2. SP1 cannot be installed directly except SQL Express, which is rebuilt in SP1. SP1 should be applied after RTM is installed.

|||

I posted this question to your other thread, but I'll post it here as well to try to get you going again. The error you are getting is a result of trying to instal a version of SQL 2005 on an OS that does not contain the appropriate OS SP, not a SQL service pack. If you can supply us with the exact OS & service pack level and the version of SQL you are trying to install, we can help out.

I'm a little confused on your OS. Can you do start -> Run and type in "winver". This will tell you your OS and SP level. Can you let me know what that shows? That way we'll be able to figure out what you need to install to get going.

Thanks,
Sam

Renaming a computer causes a corresponding name change for the Web server and SQL Server instance (if it is on the same computer).

In some cases, Reporting Services is not functional after a computer name change. If you are running a Windows 2000 server and the ReportServer Windows service runs as Local System, the ReportServer Windows service no longer starts automatically when you restart the computer. If you are running Windows Server 2003, the service will start, but you cannot connect to the report server database. To restore service after a computer name change, follow these steps:

Run rsconfig at the command line to update the encrypted connection information in the report server database. Use this syntax when running rsconfig (your values may be different).

rsconfig -s<NewServerName> -dreportserver -aSQL -uSA -p<SAPassword>

Reset IIS. To do this at the command line, type iisreset.

In the RSWebApplication.config file, modify the ReportServerURL setting to reflect the new server name.

In the RSReportServer.config file, modify the URLRoot setting to reflect the new server name.

Update the URL property of the program item used to access Report Manager from the Start menu. To do this, point to Start, point to Program Files, point to Microsoft SQL Server, point to Reporting Services, right-click on Report Manager. On the Web Document page, update the URL to the new server name.
Open Report Manager and update any shared data sources or report-specific data sources that contain references to the old computer name.
If you are running Windows 2000 server, perform these additional steps:

Manually start the ReportServer Windows service.

Run rsactivate at the command line. Use this syntax when running rsactivate (note that your actual values may be different if you did not install to the default path).

rsactivate -c"%installdir%\Reporting

Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config"

Reset IIS. To do this at the command line, type iisreset.

For a period of time, the report server and Report Manager may continue to be available under the previous name if you are using Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) on your corporate network. WINS maps an IP address to each computer it services. Once WINS refreshes the IP address for the renamed computer, the old computer name can no longer be used to access a report server or Report Manager.|||i did this as well, the problem is that RSCONFIG does not support Named Instances as per Microsoft's website. plus the config files are envrypted - i dont think you can see server names listed in the config files, i remember checking before i did anything

it has to be reinstalled through the GUI which does support named instances

i solved the problem to my issue once again:

asp.net 2.0 was installed on this machine as well, which caused the registry key RootVer to be set to ASP 2.0. This is why the install package was saying that 1.1 was not installed (even though it was). YOu have to temporarily change the RootVer key to 1.1, install, and then set it back. This allows you to reinstall report server etc...

[\\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ASP.NET\RootVer] = "1.1.4322.573"

Reinstalling MSDTC on Windows 2003

Hello,
Does anyone know how to reinstall MSDTC on Windows 2003?
I have a 2 node SQL 2000 cluster (active/passive) which is having problems
failing over to the other node. Failing over the MSDTC Group to the other
node causes MSDTC to fail with Application EVENT ID 4156 ("RPC raised an
exception with a return code RPC_S_INVALIDA_ARG"). The System Log generates
EVENT ID 1069 ("Cluster resource 'MSDTC Resource' in Resource Group 'MSDTC
Group' failed").
I've been able to find an article explaining how to reinstall MSDTC on
Windows 2000, but not on Windows 2003. Any assistance on this would be much
appreciated. Thanks
Hi
Searching Google for "RPC raised an exception with a return code
RPC_S_INVALIDA_ARG" turned up a few threads, of which this one may be of
interest http://tinyurl.com/cnoqm

DNS seems fine as i can connect to and from the server across the network.
No other errors are generated apart from the MSDTC and Cluster errors. SQL
fails over successful, just not the MSDTC group

There is a note on there at the bottom, which says if you're using Windows
2003 to refer to the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301600/. That
only goes through setting up MSDTC on 2003 initially.
I'm not sure if the method for rebuilding MSDTC in that article applies to
Windows 2003 due to the note at the bottom, referring us to KB301600.

ThanksHi

I've been able to find an article explaining how to reinstall MSDTC on

Reinstalling MS DTC

Here I go for last time, I promise.
I uninstalled MS DTC (in an stupid attemp to avoid a distributed transaction
to start), by doing :
net stop MSDTC
MSDTC - uninstall
After some charitative aim told me what I wanted to do is not possible, I
decided to reinstall :
MSDTC -install
net start MSDTC
I can see the "Distributed Transaction Coordinator" item, in the service
manager, it is running for sure.
Also, the Services console shows it as "started".
But I still getting the message MSDTC on server 'myserver' is unavailable'.
I've repeated the operation a couple of times, to be sure (deinstall and
reinstall) and still not working.
Actually, I recall yesterday I was able to stop and restart MSDTC without
problem, several times, but I was just doing that : stop & restart.
Today it happens that I "uninstall" it and then it is not like before any
more.
I'm using an account with Administrator privilegies (Windows 2000 Advanced
Server / SQL Server 2000 Enterprise)
Is there something else I need to do to ? should I need to restart the SQL
Server ? SQL Agent ?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
If you remove and then re-install MSDTC, you may need to restart SQL Server
for it to be able to use it. MSDTC has to be running when SQL Server starts
or it cannot use it. I am not sure this will resolve the problem, but I
would stop MSDTC and SQL Server. Then start MSDTC and verify that it is
running. Then start SQL Server.

Regards,If you remove and then re-install MSDTC, you may need to restart SQL Server
for it to be able to use it. MSDTC has to be running when SQL Server starts
or it cannot use it. I am not sure this will resolve the problem, but I
would stop MSDTC and SQL Server. Then start MSDTC and verify that it is
running. Then start SQL Server.

ReInstalling Katmai.

I cannot reinstall Katmai.
Somehow, I created a situation where Management Studio could not connect to reporting services. Being unable to diagnose why, I decided to uninstall and reinstall. I had installed everything. After running about 10 uninstalls, I went to C:/Program Files/ and blasted the whole Microsoft SQL Server tree. I went to the registry and did the same thing in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Microsoft SQL Server.
I rebooted. The error message: An instance with the same name is already installed on this computer. I'm guessing the setup program detected MSSQLSERVER in some registry key, and not another instance, but if I knew which one, I wouldn't be posting to this forum.

It may be that Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services has an SQL Server(InstanceName) entry.

Reinstalling DB Server - Backup/Restore Help

Hi,
Seems my old thread doesnt have any response anymore.
reposting it again with only relavent info..
For some reasons I need to reinstall my Production SQL
Server 2000 Database Server from OS level and infact
recreating arrays etc.
My point of Intrest is How to plan the backup of databases
from existing server to restore them after reinstallation.
1. Can I just create the .BAK files of user/system
databases copy it to other server and restore it on
freshly installed server.
or
2. I detach the user/system databases.. copy the .mdf
& .ldf files to other server and restore it on freshly
installed server using attach db sp.
In both cases what is the difference and what are the
advantages and disadvantages? and which one is followed in
practice?
Also, the server on which I am going to backup database
has SP3a for SQL Server.
Do I first need to up to date the SP's(2,3a) for SQL
server on fresh Installation then restore the Databases or
Vice-versa? (keeping in mind I want to restore the
master, msdb backups). Also does restoring masterdb backup
on fresh Installation makes any sense?
Thanks In advance for all the patience and replies.
Sincere Regards
